48th Highlanders of Canada
The 48th Highlanders of Canada, established in Toronto in 1891, is one of the most storied and recognizable regiments in the Canadian Armed Forces. Built on strong Highland traditions, the regiment’s identity is rooted in the heritage of Scottish service, discipline, and community leadership. Its members proudly wear the MacKenzie tartan, the iconic blue hackle, and maintain ceremonial customs that reflect over a century of military tradition.
The regiment’s operational legacy is extensive. The 48th Highlanders first distinguished themselves during the South African War, marking the beginning of a long record of service in major conflicts. During the First World War, Highlanders fought with extraordinary courage as part of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, participating in some of history’s most demanding battles. Their service continued in the Second World War, where the regiment served from Sicily through North-West Europe, earning a reputation for determination, adaptability, and battlefield effectiveness.
Since 1945, members of the 48th Highlanders have served on countless NATO, UN, and coalition missions, contributing to Canada’s international peacekeeping and security efforts. Domestically, the regiment plays a vital role in supporting emergency operations, humanitarian response, and public ceremonies throughout Toronto. Whether responding to natural disasters, augmenting regular force operations, or representing the CAF at major civic events, the Highlanders maintain a strong and visible presence across the city.
In modern times, the regiment continues to train highly capable Army Reserve infantry soldiers skilled in weapons handling, fieldcraft, reconnaissance, and light infantry operations. Their mission is to provide trained soldiers in support of Canadian Forces deployments at home and abroad, while preserving the traditions and values that have defined the regiment for more than 130 years.
The 48th Highlanders of Canada stands today as a symbol of Toronto’s military heritage—proud, professional, and deeply connected to the community it serves.
